The Foreign Minister Hon, Justin Tkatchenko on behalf of the government has announced its plan to close the Taiwan Trade Mission office in Taipei at the press conference on the 10th of January 2023. The closure of the PNG Trade Office in Taiwan in April this year was part of efforts by this Government to prioritize PNG’s representations. This does not mean giving lesser importance to Taiwan.
The Government continues to value the commercial interests with Taiwan through the means of business liaison contacts. This is by no way an attempt by my government to part-take in the geopolitics that is going on in our region, but as a matter of sound economic management. Minister Tkatchenko said the closure of the Trade Office in Taiwan is due to no recorded trade significant to keep the office operational.
The government will save nearly K5 million a year by the closure of the Taipe Trade Mission office which had not produced any tangible trade results for Papua New Guinea. He said all staff at the Trade Mission office in Taipei had been recalled back to the Department of Foreign Affairs. He said the office would now be renamed as PNG-Taipei Economic Office. “This is to ensure that more fruitful relationships and economic ties can persist and be consistent with both Taipei and China. “The new office in Taipei would be opened by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Taipe working closely with the People’s Republic of China.” “It would be called the PNG -Taipei Economic Office and we will appoint a business liaison official to run the new office between Taipei, China and Papua New Guinea. “We hope to see much better relationships and economic outcomes from this new office and from the new position of a business liaise officer that would work closely with Taipei Chain. “We plan to have this implemented over the next six months,” Minister Tkatchenko said.
